Is the shampoo safe for color-treated hair when used every other day? I have a permanent brunette root color and an all-over demi-permanent color. Should I add a hydrating shampoo into my routine?
Super good question, thanks for reaching out.
First truth, there is no such thing as “color safe” shampoo. (The mechanics of shampoo surfactants are designed to pick up dirt, oil and yes, color molecules.) But… we did absolutely everything we could to make one anyway.
-
Instead of "color safe," we say Astral Amino Shampoo "protects hair from stripping and fading."
-
We used very gentle, non-SLS surfactants, mostly reserved for baby shampoos.
- Hitting the sweet spot on the pH scale also helps retain color: Astral Amino Shampoo is under 5. (It's a big deal.)
- The Sodium PCA and Amino Acids in Astral Amino Shampoo are known to help your color stay in your hair and moisturize it too.
-
We did so much testing with colored hair because we know this is very important, using the most synthetic, “color safe”, silicone- and quat-filled “luxury” shampoo as our benchmark for testing Astral Amino Shampoo.
-
We washed colored hair (many colors, many types of color) with the benchmark and with Astral Amino Shampoo ten times to test color safety. Our findings were that Astral Amino worked just as well as the big “color safe” brand. In fact, you couldn’t tell the difference between newly colored, unwashed brown hair and the same hair washed 10 times with Astral Amino.
- Demi color will always fade a little faster than permanent color.

When it comes to reds and vivids, we suggest CULT+KING CreamPop instead of conventional shampoo and conditioner due to the larger color molecules involved that wash out quickly and easily.
