Did your BALM melt in the summer heat? It's trying to put itself back together right now, and it may need your help. Here's what to do.
A salon owner said to us the other day, "I like it when BALM melts because it lets me know it's real." The 29% shea butter that makes BALM so luscious when it melts on contact with your skin is the same thing that makes it melt in the sun and hot delivery vehicles. (That's why we put the sticker on the outside of every shipment containing BALM that says "Keep out of the sun.")
One way to think about BALM is like natural peanut butter, not the highly processed kind. We do not use plastic-based filers and synthetic emulsifiers; we can't do that and still be true to the earth and our non-toxic ingredient philosophy.
The good news is that your BALM is just fine. All the good stuff is still in there and working. It is not spoiled. It just needs to cool down and rest—and maybe a little help from you.
- First, don't open the container right away. If it's hot, the oil and cream have likely separated in the container, and it will spill out. Instead, with the container closed, shake it for at least 30 seconds to put the oil and cream back together. BALM has always responded very well to shaking. (If you open it while it's separated and too much of the oil or cream ingredients spill out, it will disrupt the formula and might never go back together as formulated.)
- Then, put it in the fridge or a cool place to rest.
- The next time you look, it's probably back to BALM. If it needs a little extra, stir it.
